As a boater for many years, I have managed to foul my prop, rudder, and keel on more than one occasion. Half submerged lobster pots, floating line, rope, plastic bags, fishing line, and assorted other flotsam have fouled most boaters' underwater gear at one time or other. Quite often the only way to clear the situation is to go into the water and swim UNDER THE BOAT with a knife and cut away the offending material. This usually involves significant time, effort, and the use of both hands—all of which put you at great bodily risk. This is extremely dangerous, and the slightest bit of wave action makes it even more so. Being in the water is one thing, but being UNDER THE BOAT is quite another.
